St George Strollers Past Walks

St George Strollers run two types of walk, monthly 30-minute walks of about a mile, known at the 'St George Park Stroll' and 90-minute walks of up to 3 miles twice per month. The longer walks are different locations / routes each time, here is a list of all the walks we have run since we started in May 2011.

St George Park Strolls - each month - third Tuesday - 10.30am

A St George Park Strolls start from The Beehive Centre, Stretford Road at 10.30am on the third Tuesday of each month.

These are Level 1 walks which are suitable for those recovering from illness or injury and anyone who wishes to improve their fitness.

269. Tuesday 12th March - Meanwhile Park

A fairly level linear walk passing a naval hero, industrial heritage mosaics, a living wall, fake ruins and more, ending at Old Market.

A level circular walk through local mining history, mixing in a brick fish, an owl and green spaces.

268. Monday 26th February - Bath River and Canalside

A circular walk from Bath bus station. We walked to Pulteney Bridge, then alongside the river and canal, through Sydney Gardens and passed by Parade Gardens.

265. Wednesday 10th January - A Stroll Around Northville

A circular walk mainly on good paths. In an area seldom explored, discovering green spaces such as the tiny Poets’ Park.

266. Thursday 25th January - Bristol City Walls

An urban circular walk around the old Bristol City walls to include passing St John on the Wall, a 14th Century church built into the city walls.

263. Friday 8th December - Farmwards from Lawrence Hill

A linear walk through Newtown and the Dings to cross the “banana bridge” on the way to Victoria Park and a maze. We finished at Windmill Hill City Farm.

262. Thursday 23rd November - Waters Meet

A linear walk following the sound of the Strad Brook down to the Avon past a wildlife pond. The walk continues beside the Avon, then up to Avonview Cemetery, ending at Church Road, St George, near Chalks Road.

A circular walk along the Monarch’s Way across fields (may be livestock) to the River Avon then branching off along the Dramway to finish at the Avon Valley Railway

250 Wednesday 26th May - A Ghostly Pub Crawl

A linear walk ending in Easton Leisure Centre with refreshments & our 250th walk celebratory cake. We visited the sites of pubs that have been closed or re-developed & shared stories of good nights out in Redfield, Barton Hill & Lawrence Hill.

247. Tuesday 11th April - Visiting Cleopatra

A circular walk visiting little known green spaces around the Kingsway & Two Mile Hill, paying a visit to siblings, Cleopatra & Plimsoll. With a pause at the White Elephant Café before completing the walk.

248. Wednesday 26th April - Railway Ramble

A linear walk starting at the Maes Knoll Carvery. Following the railway path down to the bottom of Sturminster Rd then along the stream, past Tesco’s to finish at the Lodekka pub.

Following the River Trym through beautiful Badock's Wood and end at Westbury-on-Trym’s War Memorial.

Transport arrangements for this walk had to be changed at short notice due to cancellation of the 506 bus.

We crossed 8 bridges, passed through some small green spaces and meandered around central Bristol as we completed this circular walk. A chance to discover how central Bristol had changed during lockdown.

A walk up to Hanham Mount then over to Magpie Bottom, and return to the start. This was a hilly walk but it avoided the steepest hills.

10th Birthday Party - May 2021

On Tuesday, 11th May, 2021, walkers past and present joined together for a Zoom 10th birthday party, celebrating 10 years of St George Strollers' walks.

St George Strollers at WalkFest - May 2021

As part of WalkFest 2021 St George Strollers created 3 walks which can be walked independently at any time.

There is a circular walk in St George, celebrating 10 years of walking together and 2 linear walks, further afield.

All three walks use the Go Jauntly app which can be downloaded to your smart phone or tablet.

Walk 1 - Malago and North Street Art >>

A 3 mile linear walk on pavements starting by following the Malago through parts of Bedminster.

Then onto South Street and North Street in Southville looking at the Street Art from the Upfest. This is a local Art competition and some of the paintings are still left in Southville. Finishes at Wapping Wharf in the Docks.

Walk 2 - Whitchurch Railway Path >>

A lovely linear walk, just under 3 miles on surfaced paths from Whitchurch to Brislington, ending at the Lodekka pub on the A4.

This was the St George Strollers' 200th walk back in November 2019.

In May 2021 the walk is even more beautiful including blossom, birds and possible fairy housing.

Walk 3 - A 10th Birthday Stroll >>

On Wednesday 11th May 2011 the St George Strollers enjoyed their very first “taster” walk of just 2 miles, visiting St George Park and Avonview Cemetery.

Enjoy this updated version of the walk to celebrate the 10th birthday of the Strollers. Look out for 2 very special new murals and a new memorial to the former residents of the Eastville Workhouse.

Virtual Walk May 2020

Our planned walk on Friday 22nd May "Get Growing and the Northern Slopes", was due to be part of Bristol Walk Fest 2020.

Due to Covid-19, WalkFest was cancelled.

However as part of #virtualwalkfest we have created an opportunity to enjoy a virtual walk around the route. Coronavirus Pandemic - March 2020 to July 2021

Due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic all our walks were cancelled from mid March 2020.

We restarted in August 2021.

During this time walk leaders regularly kept in touch by zoom to review whether walks could restart as the restrictions and guidance frequently changed.

A linear walk from Redland to the Colston Hall via Kingsdown and Cotham. We visited the sculptures in the Royal Fort gardens and then ascended Brandon Hill.

201. Tuesday 3rd Dec - Bristol and Romanticism

A linear walk ending at Old Market. Mainly level with a fairly steep descent down Park St. We walked around well-known historical buildings and areas of central Bristol, following the footsteps of Chatterton, Coleridge, Southey and Cottle—key figures of the Romanticism movement in the city.

202. Thursday 19th Dec - Christmas Walk and Meeting

A short walk starting at Bethesda Church. We will walked through Avonview Cemetery and past the allotments at Strawberry Lane through to Troopers Hill Field then back to Bethesda Church for our Christmas get together.

A linear walk starting at The Swan, Swineford. We walked across fields to the River Avon, crossing via the Railway Path and continued alongside the Avon, past Swinford Lock towards Saltford, finishing at The Riverside pub.

198. Thursday 24th Oct - Bath River and Canalside Walk

A circular walk starting at Bath bus station. Towards Parade Gardens, cross Pulteney Bridge and walking beside the river, then joining the Kennet & Avon canal. We continued alongside the canal to Sydney Gardens, through to Great Pulteney Street and back to the bus station.

195. Tuesday 3rd Sept - River Avon Past and Present

A visit to our industrial past on the River Avon including the final resting place of two key people in the history of Butlers tar works in Crews Hole. The walk ended in Hanham after an uphill section through woodland and Dundridge Park.

A linear walk starting at St Luke’s Church in Brislington. We skirted Victory Park and walked to Nightingale Valley following Brislington Brook, then crossing the River Avon footbridge, walked up Blackswarth Road and finished at Pile Marsh.

Due to the unusually hot weather the planned Swineford to Saltford Riverside walk was switched to a much shorter stroll around Warmley Forest Park, with shady trees and plenty of options to shorten the route further if required.

This walk had to be changed due to New Brislington Bridge being closed and the 36 bus being diverted. However Susan was able to sort out an alternative route from the planned start point at the Pilemarsh bus stop to the planned destination of Windmill Hill City Farm via Barton Hill, the Dings and Victoria Park.

We stepped into one of Bristol’s ‘alternative’ communities to see ecohouses, a community garden, some great views, lots of allotments and a quick look at a city farm. There was a café stop at the city farm on the way back.

85. Tue 18th November St Anne’s Park and Woods
A loop along the wharves of the old St Anne’s Board Mills and back to the river footbridge via Wyatts View Open Space. The walk then took a gentle climb to St Anne’s Park, down through St Anne’s Woods on newly maintained paths and passing St Anne’s holy well and back to our start point.

83. Wed 15th October Eight Bridges Walk
The planned linear walk along part of the River Frome Walkway and into the open spaces of Frenchay had to be changed due to the state of the paths after the week's wet weather, instead we revisited the 8 bridges walk in the City Centre.

80. Fri 12th Sept Crews Hole and Conham’s Copper Smelting History
A linear walk from Hanham via Conham to finish at the Chalks Rd entrance to St George Park. Local historian Rob Acton-Campbell was with us to tell us something of the history of the ruined copperworks in Conham, Conham Hall and the Cupolas of Crews Hole.

81. Wed 24th September - Purdown Hill
This was a long walk, with steep slopes, taking us through Eastville Park over the river Frome, then the M32 and on up to the top of Purdown, next to the Communications Tower. We then returned, partly along the same route, but ending by Tesco at Eastville for a return bus to Lawrence Hill.

A walk through beautiful Stockwood Open Space Local Nature Reserve starting at Hungerford Gardens and then making use of the Whitchurch Railway Path to visit a section of the Brislington Brook.

75. Tue 24th June - Dame Sylvia Crowe Walk
From the Create Centre we walked through some of the work of landscape architect, Sylvia Crowe, connecting Greville Smyth Park and Brunel Lock. We also walked part of the year-old Festival Way and the River Avon Trail. Our finish was near the Create Centre with an option to buy lunch or hot drinks.

68. Thursday 13th March - Ashton Court - Deer Walk
A coach provided by a grant from the St George Neighbourhood Partnership Wellbeing Fund took us to and from Ashton Court.
A ranger at Ashton Court then led us on a walk to visit the deer and to tell us of the history. There was time after the walk for lunch at the cafe and to explore the grounds further before we returned to the coach.

69. Wednesday 26th March - Literary history tour of Clifton Village and the environs
A walk from the Victoria Rooms, around Clifton Village to see houses associated with people linked to our eighteenth and nineteenth century literary heritage. Finishing at the Cathedral, where lunch or coffee were available.

65. Wednesday 22nd January - Sea Mills to Durdham Down
A linear walk through Sea Mills and an old green walkway in Old Sneyd Park, with beautiful houses and some interesting snippets of history. On the way tea/coffee was provided at St Mary Magdalene Church. We ended with an easy walk across the Downs close to top of Blackboy Hill, before finally making our way home.

A return visit to the lovely Nature Reserve of Willsbridge Mill. A chance to see how the dipping pond and the recycled garden were getting on. Then a walk along by Siston Brook passing over the Dramway and ending up at the Avon Valley Railway Buffet for lunch.

57. Wednesday 25th September - Walk for Health Anniversary Walk
We joined other groups to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Walk for Health, Bristol.
The walk was from Millennium Square, over Pero’s and Prince’s bridges to the M-shed, then along the Chocolate Path and back through Underfall Yard along the South side of the Harbour.
The theme of the day was: "Wear red and green, if you’re keen!"

35. Friday 12th October - Kings Weston
A special walk in Kings Weston Park, learning about its many historic features, with local guide David Martyn of Kings Weston Action Group (KWAG). Travel was by coach funded by Community First. Lunch was in the cafe in Kings Weston House.

33. Monday 10th September - Bitton to Swineford
A circular walk from Bitton along the river to Swineford, returning across Brewery Hill on the Monarch's Way, with views across the Avon towards the Mendips. Some of the walkers then had lunch at Bitton Railway Station before returning to St George on the bus.

34. Tuesday 25th September - North Common Walk
A walk from Warmley to North Common and back. This walk on a dry morning with some sunshine was mostly off road or on quiet back roads.

St George Strollers Walks - August 2012

31. Friday 10th August - Eastwood Farm
Starting from the Maypole, a walk down to the river at Conham, taking the Ferry (50p return) across to visit the water meadows of Eastwood Farm. There was then a break to enjoy refreshments at Beeses Riverside Bar & Tea Gardens before returning to Hanham via Dundridge Park.

32. Wednesday 29th August - M Shed Walk
On a wet day this is a historic guided walk, run by the M Shed took in the Floating Harbour, Bedminster, Victoria Park and returning to the M Shed.

29. Tuesday 10th July - Northern Slopes

A visit to the spectacular views of the Northern Slopes in Lower Knowle with expert guide, Julia Tutton, from the Northern Slopes Initiative. The walk was linear, returning from a different bus stop from the one used to arrive at the start of the walk.

30. Wednesday 25th July - Kelston Round Top
This one-way walk was more challenging than our usual walks, taking in part of the Cotswold Way, with wonderful views, and ending at the Old Crown in Kelston for lunch.

27. Wed 13 June - St Phillips Greenway
A walk through Netham park, to Barton Hill, then across the Feeder Canal, and on to the Black Castle via Arnos Vale and a stop at their new café. This was a one way walk, returning by bus.

28. Fri 29th June Walled Garden Walk
A walk to find out about allotments, then on through Barton Hill to the Walled Garden for lunch via the cycle path.
This walk got a plug in an article in 'The Post' on St George.

25. Fri 11th May - Warmley Forest Park
After a short bus ride, this walk took us through Warmley Forest Park and over Siston Common. As well as lovely countryside and great views it included evidence of past industrial activity.

26. Mon 21st May - Birthday Walk
To celebrate 12 months since the Strollers were formed this was a special walk on Troopers Hill led by radio’s wildlife expert, Ed Drewitt. This was followed by refreshments (including and excellent birthday cake!) at Summerhill Methodist Church and a meeting to plan year 2.

23. Tue 10th April - Warmley Wander
This was a chance to discover the hidden history of industrial Warmley. It included a visit to Neptune and the Grotto followed by a light lunch at museum cafe. Afterwards some walkers stayed to visit the fascinating museum. Many thanks to our guest leader, Alan.

24. Mon 23rd April - St George’s Day Walk
A visit (in the rain) to a hidden gem of an 18th Century building hidden in the Crews Hole Woodlands and known as the Bath House. By kind permission of the landowners.

The walk included a look at Snuff Mills, a stroll through the Frome Valley and Eastville Park and some back ways through Whitehall.

19. Mon 13th February City Walls Walk
A walk around the perimeter of the original settlement of Bristol to discover some of the history with a stop for refreshments at St Stephen’s cafe.

20. Wed 29th February Discover the Dings
A linear walk exploring the Dings and on through Temple Meads station to Victoria Park. The walk Continued to Windmill City Farm, to Bedminster and then buses home.

18. Fri 27th January Meadow Vale
This walk connected 3 of St George’s green spaces, Meadow Vale, Troopers Hill and Plummers Hill using some little known walkways. Everyone enjoyed hot soup afterwards at the Meadow Vale Community Centre.

Starting from St George Park and including Greenbank Cemetery in a hail storm before ending up at the Beehive Centre for a festive celebration.

St George Strollers Walks - November 2011

13. Wednesday 2nd November St George Park Walk & Planning Meeting
A wander around the park followed by a discussion meeting with light refreshments in the library.

 

14.Friday 11th November Remembrance Walk
A walk starting at Hanham Common that included a visit to a cross in memory of a World War 2 bomber pilot, Frank Samuel Martin, in Hencliff Woods. We held a two minute silence at 11am.

6. Thur 11th Aug Troopers Hill - A wet evening, but a good turnout for the Strollers first evening walk. As well as Troopers Hill, we visited Dundridge Park.

7. Wed 24th Aug Wick Golden Valley - A short bus trip for a walk in this wonderful Local Nature Reserve in South Glos followed by lunch in the local pub.

4. Mon 4th July Willsbridge Wander - a short bus trip followed by an exploration of Willsbridge LNR in hot sunshine.

 

5. Wed 20th July Avon Aquatic Wander - A walk around Wyatts View Open Space and Netham Park was followed by a return boat trip on historic boat Redshank to Beeses Riverside Bar and Tea Gardens to enjoy a singing event as part of the Wild River Festival. Thanks to St George Neighbourhood Partnership for funding the boat trip from their 'Wellbeing' fund.
