145. Tuesday 11th July - Wicker Whales

A walk from Sea Mills railway station to Old Sneyd Park, Bennett’s Patch and White’s Paddock ending at Roman ruins on the Portway.

A circular walk around Warmley Forest Park and beyond, taking in a northern section of the Dramway & retuning to the Waiting Room café.

A linear walk taking in Siston Common and Rodway Common, ending with a walk around Page Park, Staple Hill.

A repeat of our popular circular walk alongside the river and canal. After lunch an optional second, shorter walk around the town.

141. Friday 12th May - Discover the Gosey

For our 6th birthday walk, we visited the Gosey (Coombe Brook Valley) and then followed little known footpaths to end with light refreshments and a meeting in the back room of Summerhill Methodist Church, 5 Air Balloon Rd.

142. Thursday 25th May - From Water to Windmill

A short bus trip to our start point in Brislington to walk through 4 green spaces, enjoying views across the city, to our destination of Windmill Hill City Farm.

A linear walk around Easton, ending at Old Market to see how Easton has changed over the years.

136. Wed 15th Mar - “What’s New?”

We last did this circular walk through St George’s lesser known green spaces in 2012. Starting from Crofts End Church we saw new play areas and wood sculptures by Andy O’Neil. The walk ended at the St George Park entrance on Chalks Rd.

137. Mon 27th Mar - Unexpected Green Spaces In Northville

A circular walk, starting & ending at Southmead Hospital. On pavements & paths around Northville visiting several green spaces including the little known Poet’s Park and Millennium Green.

138. Thurs 30th March - East & Central Partnership Walk

St George Strollers led a 3 mile walk as part of the 'March Meet Up' of East Bristol Health Walk groups starting at The Beehive Centre.

There were also options of a 1 mile walk in St George Park and a 2 mile walk in St George Park & Avonview Cemetery led by other groups.

St George Strollers - February 2017

134. Mon 13th Feb - A Stroll Around East Clifton

A circular walk, on pavements, around East Clifton where we admired the beautiful buildings, a cathedral and several churches. The walk finished at Clifton Down shopping centre.

135. Tues 28th Feb - Brislington Brook to Whitchurch Airport

A linear walk following part of Brislington Brook and the Whitchurch Railway Path also visiting Whitchurch Green and then on to Whitchurch Airport where Hengrove Leisure Centre for hot drinks at the café. (The route was changed from that advertised due to muddy conditions at Stockwood Open Space).

132. Friday 13th Jan - Cascade Steps To Redfield

A simple linear walk along familiar paths following water from Cascade Steps, then up through Netham Park to finish at Redfield. On surfaced paths apart from Netham Park (grass).

133. Thurs 26th Jan - From Water to Windmill

This walk had to be changed due to New Brislington Bridge being closed and the 36 bus being diverted. However Susan was able to sort out an alternative route from the planned start point at the Pilemarsh bus stop to the planned destination of Windmill Hill City Farm via Barton Hill, the Dings and Victoria Park.

130. Fri 9th Dec - Warmley Railway & Ring Road Paths

A circular walk from the Waiting Room café along the Railway Path up to the old Mangotsfield Station & returning down the Ring Road Path to the café.

131. Tue 20th Dec - Christmas Walk

This shorter, linear walk from Kingswood Park to Wesley Memorial Church, through the beautiful Magpie Bottom ended with a Christmas celebration to share news and views for future walks.

128. Wed 16th Nov - Malago Greenway

A linear walk along the mostly flat Malago Greenway ending at the Imperial Park shopping centre.

129. Mon 28th Nov - Plaques in Central Bristol

A circular walk touring some of Bristol’s historic plaques. At the start, this walk involved some steps and a long climb up St Michael’s Hill, but we took it slowly. Then it was mainly flat and downhill.

A circular walk to discover the “Moon Temple” on Royate Hill and a new memorial in May Park.

A linear walk starting at Southmead Hospital folowing the River Trym through Tymside Open Space, Badocks Wood, and Canford Park before ending at the War Memorial in Westbury.

124. Fri 9th Sept - Blaise Estate to Sea Mills

Coach to Blaise Estate for a linear walk through the estate, alongside a brook then river to Sea Mills. Option to either get bus from Shirehampton Rd to City Centre or train from Sea Mills station to Lawrence Hill.

125. Mon 26th Sept - Two Parks & a Cemetery

A linear walk through Barton Hill, Netham Park, Sparke Evans Park & on to Arnos Vale Cemetery where there will be time to explore. Some steps (15) but can be avoided. Return by No.36 bus from Wick Rd, reached by a long incline up Sandy Park Rd.

A circular walk taking in Portishead marina, coastal footpath and nature reserve which included bird viewing hides.

A linear walk from the Hub at Lockleaze, BS7 9FB, across the beautiful Stoke Park estate finishing at Snuff Mills to take a choice of buses to return home.

A linear walk from Hanham Common, along the Avon Valley Woodlands & River Avon Trails ending at the Bitton Railway.

A circular walk through Willsbridge & Bitton passing by a steam railway, a disused mill and the route taken by the coal from local mines on the Dramway, ending at Bitton Railway.

A walk along Magpie Bottom beside the Strad Brook to find the surprising locations of George Bryant Britton's boot-making businesses.

A linear walk through green spaces and besides streams ending at Snuff Mills and its cafe. There will a choice of buses for the return journey.

A linear walk through three green spaces and parks, following the path pilgrims would have taken to St Anne's Well, followed by a a riverside stroll.

After a short bus journey this walk started with a stroll through Eastville Park. We then made our way through quiet backways via Greenbank cemetery to St George Park where the walk will ended at the Chalks Rd entrance.

An outing to Bradford on Avon, where we walked along the riverside and back along the canal, stopping for lunch at the unique “Boat Café” before getting the train home again.

100. Mon 13th July - 100th walk “Here be Dragons!”
To celebrate our 100th walk we went dragon hunting across St George, finishing at beautiful Magpie Bottom, near Bryants Hill. Too wet for a picnic, but a good turnout despite the rain.

A fairly gentle walk mainly on tarmac paths and pavements ending a short walk away from Warmley Station.

A much requested repeat of our previous walk taking in the river, canal and Sydney Park. A stop at the museum café for coffee/ lunch or your own sandwiches before continuing to the bus station for return bus.

92. Tue 10th March - Street Monsters
This linear walk followed quiet backways to the north and Ridgeway Playing Fields returning via a piece of amazing art past Crofts End Church to finish at the Chalks Rd entrance to St George Park.

93. Fri 27th March - Montpelier to Muller Rd and back
We stepped into one of Bristol’s ‘alternative’ communities to see ecohouses, a community garden, some great views, lots of allotments and a quick look at a city farm. There was a café stop at the city farm on the way back.

90. Mon 2nd February - The Primrose Path
A walk through some of St George’s lesser known footpaths to visit hidden green spaces and view a blue plaque to the “Beethoven of brass” with a cafe stop at Hillside Court.

An easy access walk through the Avonview Cemetery, across St George Park to the Railway Path. Continuing on from there to loop back to finish outside Aldi's on Church Road.

88. Thu 8th January - Opening Doors Walk
A meander around the centre of the city, visiting some of the buildings taking part in the Opening Doors project. One day a year visitors are allowed into historically and architecturally interesting buildings.

A walk through woodland within this National Trust estate. Beautiful views and Winter bird life.

86. Thurs 4th December Cossham Hospital and Hillfields
A walk from the highest point in Bristol taking in some wonderful views, a section of the Railway Path, a park and some pleasant suburban streets.

87. Fri 19th December Christmas Walk
A walk to visit Cleopatra’s resting place and two of St George’s lesser known green spaces. Afterwards we had our Christmas bring and share get together and meeting at Summerhill Methodist Church.

St George Strollers Walks - November 2014

85. Tue 18th November St Anne’s Park and Woods
A loop along the wharves of the old St Anne’s Board Mills and back to the river footbridge via Wyatts View Open Space. The walk then took a gentle climb to St Anne’s Park, down through St Anne’s Woods on newly maintained paths and passing St Anne’s holy well and back to our start point.

82. Fri 3rd October Chew Valley Lake
A coach trip to Chew Valley and a walk along by the lake and through neighbouring fields with lunch enjoying the views before returning.

83. Wed 15th October Eight Bridges Walk
The planned linear walk along part of the River Frome Walkway and into the open spaces of Frenchay had to be changed due to the state of the paths after the week's wet weather, instead we revisited the 8 bridges walk in the City Centre.

80. Fri 12th Sept Crews Hole and Conham’s Copper Smelting History
A linear walk from Hanham via Conham to finish at the Chalks Rd entrance to St George Park. Local historian Rob Acton-Campbell was with us to tell us something of the history of the ruined copperworks in Conham, Conham Hall and the Cupolas of Crews Hole.

81. Wed 24th September - Purdown Hill
This was a long walk, with steep slopes, taking us through Eastville Park over the river Frome, then the M32 and on up to the top of Purdown, next to the Communications Tower. We then returned, partly along the same route, but ending by Tesco at Eastville for a return bus to Lawrence Hill.

78. Thurs 7th Aug - Warmley to Willsbridge
Starting at the Warmley end we walked gently downhill along the Dramway and then picked up the Cycle path to Willsbridge Mill ending up at the Avon Valley Railway Station for lunch.

76. Fri 11th July - Snuff Mills and Oldbury Court
A riverside walk along the Frome to the edge of Frenchay village, returning to Snuff Mills through the woodlands and open spaces of Oldbury Court.

77. Mon 21st July - Stockwood Open Space Local Nature Reserve
A walk through beautiful Stockwood Open Space Local Nature Reserve starting at Hungerford Gardens and then making use of the Whitchurch Railway Path to visit a section of the Brislington Brook.

74. Mon 9th June - Arnos Vale Cemetery
Part of our grant from St George Neighbourhood Partnership is funded a guided tour of some of the most interesting graves in this lovely cemetery. An additional short walk to the upper part followed the tour.

75. Tue 24th June - Dame Sylvia Crowe Walk
From the Create Centre we walked through some of the work of landscape architect, Sylvia Crowe, connecting Greville Smyth Park and Brunel Lock. We also walked part of the year-old Festival Way and the River Avon Trail. Our finish was near the Create Centre with an option to buy lunch or hot drinks.

72. Thurs 8th May - Stapleton Rd to Cabot Circus via St Werburghs
A walk through St Werburghs, onto the Frome Valley Walkway and finishing at Cabot Circus.

73. Fri 23rd May - Birthday Walk - Troopers Hill/Summerhill Ramble
A ramble in the Troopers Hill area, with a long strenuous climb up Lamb Hill; but with marvellous views, the sight of butterflies and early summer greenery and flowers. Followed by a walkers' meeting with refreshments at the Church.

70. Fri 11th April - 8 Bridges in Bristol
A slightly different take on our popular Harbourside walk. We stayed close to the waterways, so it was mostly on the flat, and included several park areas and some fascinating points of local interest.

68. Thursday 13th March - Ashton Court - Deer Walk
A coach provided by a grant from the St George Neighbourhood Partnership Wellbeing Fund took us to and from Ashton Court.
A ranger at Ashton Court then led us on a walk to visit the deer and to tell us of the history. There was time after the walk for lunch at the cafe and to explore the grounds further before we returned to the coach.

69. Wednesday 26th March - Literary history tour of Clifton Village and the environs
A walk from the Victoria Rooms, around Clifton Village to see houses associated with people linked to our eighteenth and nineteenth century literary heritage. Finishing at the Cathedral, where lunch or coffee were available.

66. Monday 10th February - Statues of Bristol
A walk around the city centre, spotting 33 statues as we went. Some you will know, some maybe not.

Following the route of the Wain Brook from St George Park to Creative Common going back in history to hear about the industries the brook used to feed. This was a linear walk ending at the bus stops at Old Market.

A linear walk through Sea Mills and an old green walkway in Old Sneyd Park, with beautiful houses and some interesting snippets of history. On the way tea/coffee was provided at St Mary Magdalene Church. We ended with an easy walk across the Downs close to top of Blackboy Hill, before finally making our way home.

62. Monday 9th December - Harbourside and Hotwells
Another chance to explore both sides of the Harbourside and its history. We took a hilly detour into Hotwells with its expansive views; this meant a long upward flight of steps but a flatter option was available.

63. Thursday 19th December - St George Park and Avonview Cemetary
A stroll in the park and then on to Avonview Cemetery to visit a few of the gravestones and hear some interesting tales. Afterwards we had our Christmas bring and share get together and meeting at The Beehive.

60. Monday 11th November - Remembrance Day Walk
A walk recounting a little of the Good Friday raid of 1941 and pausing at Greenbank cemetery to visit some graves of civilians and combattants from the Allied and Axis forces. Walk ended at the Chalks Rd entrance to St George Park.

61. Wednesday 27th November - Lawrence Hill to Eastville Park Circular Walk
A walk around a part of Eastville Park. Then by back streets and paths along the Coombe Brook to Royate Hill Nature Reserve and Greenbank Cemetary. Returning to Lawrence Hill via Bath Railway Path.

58. Wednesday 9th October - Wild Fest on the Northern Slopes
Wild Fest! 2013 - a celebration of the wildlife on the Northern Slopes. A one hour guided walk with stunning views over Bristol and a visit to a ‘pop-up’ café.

59. Friday 25th October - Bath River and Canalside Walk
A walk through the centre of Bath, crossing over Pulteney bridge, then along by the river and up the Kennet and Avon canal. Ending back by Bath bus station for lunch.

56. Monday 9th September - Willsbridge Walk
A return visit to the lovely Nature Reserve of Willsbridge Mill. A chance to see how the dipping pond and the recycled garden were getting on. Then a walk along by Siston Brook passing over the Dramway and ending up at the Avon Valley Railway Buffet for lunch.

57. Wednesday 25th September - Walk for Health Anniversary Walk
We joined other groups to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Walk for Health, Bristol.
The walk was from Millennium Square, over Pero’s and Prince’s bridges to the M-shed, then along the Chocolate Path and back through Underfall Yard along the South side of the Harbour.
The theme of the day was: "Wear red and green, if you’re keen!"

54. Friday 9th August - River walk to Dundridge via Beese’s
A river and woods walk from Hanham Common, along the river to Beese’s Bar for lunch. Then on up through Conham Vale to Dundridge and ending at Nag’s Head Hill to get the bus back. Some great views of the herons.

55. Tuesday 27th August - Kingswood to Hanham
A green walk from Kingswood to Hanham - A linear walk along green paths connecting Kingswood Park to the beautiful Cock Rd Ridge and then along byways to Hanham. Finishing with refreshments at the Jolly Sailor.

52. Wednesday 10th July - Warmley and Mangotsfield
A circular walk starting along the Railway Path towards Mangotsfield and then on public footpaths, across the fields back to Warmley Forest Park with a stop for coffee at the golf club.

A gentle riverside walk from Keynsham station to the Avon Valley Railway Station Buffet for lunch with a chance to see how a river lock works.

Nightingale Valley

Following the Brislington Brook through Nightingale Valley and St Anne’s Woods. Visiting a lonely goat, a holy well, a flood prevention scheme and a very ancient tree.

A coach trip to start, followed by a walk along the Severn Way mainly on the promenade, with views across the Severn.
There is a cafe for lunch and then return by train.

48. Friday 10th May - Clifton and Redland Walk

A chance to visit the beautiful and historic Redland Church with a member of the congregation as guide. Later we explored the area around Blackboy Hill and enjoyed a community garden.

A bus to Snuff Mills, this time walking back in the opposite direction, skirting Oldbury Court and back along the Cycle and footpath.
We finished up at the Beehive Centre for our bi- annual meeting with refreshments provided.

Dundridge Park and wonderful views from Panorama walk. On to Hanham Hall Park and then lunch at the Elm Tree pub. Return was using the 44 bus from Whittucks Rd

A visit Stoke Park with Steve England, Bristol Green Volunteer of the Year and chair of Stoke Park Action Group. Steve led us from Stoke Park to Snuff Mills, sharing information and ending the walk with a look at some fossils.

41. Monday 7th January - Barton Hill
Due to the recent wet weather the proposed walk following the Brislington Brook through Nightingale Valley and St Anne’s Woods was postponed. Instead there was a walk through Barton Hill.

39. Tuesday 4th December - Avon Gorge and Harbourside
By Coach from Aldi car park and then a walk from the Sea Walls on Clifton Downs admiring views of the Avon Gorge while walking to the Suspension Bridge. Then down to the Harbour lock and catching a ferry from Mardyke finishing at the Centre.

40. Tuesday 18th December - Pre-Christmas Walk & meeting
A walk including St George Park and Plummers Hill, with some sunshine! This was followed by refreshments and a short meeting. Thanks to everyone who brought goodies to share.

37. Monday 12th November - Page Park, Staple Hill
Enjoying the charms of Page Park after a walk along mainly paved paths, but with a detour over Rodway Common to a Tudor gem. Concluded with a cuppa or snack at the Blue Sky cafe.

38. Friday 23rd November - Harbourside and Heretics
This was a gentle walk round the Temple quarter and central Bristol taking in some religious history and seeing a few of our most famous churches. Starting at Old Market and finishing at the Cathedral after exploring back lanes near Temple Church and the Harbourside.

35. Friday 12th October - Kings Weston
A special walk in Kings Weston Park, learning about its many historic features, with local guide David Martyn of Kings Weston Action Group (KWAG). Travel was by coach funded by Community First. Lunch was in the cafe in Kings Weston House.

36. Wednesday 31st October - Haunted Bristol
A wet Halloween tour of Bristol’s haunted past hearing scary tales of mysterious happenings around the centre of Bristol. Not all of them locations you would expect!

33. Monday 10th September - Bitton to Swineford
A circular walk from Bitton along the river to Swineford, returning across Brewery Hill on the Monarch's Way, with views across the Avon towards the Mendips. Some of the walkers then had lunch at Bitton Railway Station before returning to St George on the bus.

34. Tuesday 25th September - North Common Walk
A walk from Warmley to North Common and back. This walk on a dry morning with some sunshine was mostly off road or on quiet back roads.

31. Friday 10th August - Eastwood Farm
Starting from the Maypole, a walk down to the river at Conham, taking the Ferry (50p return) across to visit the water meadows of Eastwood Farm. There was then a break to enjoy refreshments at Beeses Riverside Bar & Tea Gardens before returning to Hanham via Dundridge Park.

32. Wednesday 29th August - M Shed Walk
On a wet day this is a historic guided walk, run by the M Shed took in the Floating Harbour, Bedminster, Victoria Park and returning to the M Shed.

29. Tuesday 10th July - Northern Slopes

A visit to the spectacular views of the Northern Slopes in Lower Knowle with expert guide, Julia Tutton, from the Northern Slopes Initiative. The walk was linear, returning from a different bus stop from the one used to arrive at the start of the walk.

30. Wednesday 25th July - Kelston Round Top
This one-way walk was more challenging than our usual walks, taking in part of the Cotswold Way, with wonderful views, and ending at the Old Crown in Kelston for lunch.

27. Wed 13 June - St Phillips Greenway
A walk through Netham park, to Barton Hill, then across the Feeder Canal, and on to the Black Castle via Arnos Vale and a stop at their new café. This was a one way walk, returning by bus.

28. Fri 29th June Walled Garden Walk
A walk to find out about allotments, then on through Barton Hill to the Walled Garden for lunch via the cycle path.
This walk got a plug in an article in 'The Post' on St George.

25. Fri 11th May - Warmley Forest Park
After a short bus ride, this walk took us through Warmley Forest Park and over Siston Common. As well as lovely countryside and great views it included evidence of past industrial activity.

26. Mon 21st May - Birthday Walk
To celebrate 12 months since the Strollers were formed this was a special walk on Troopers Hill led by radio’s wildlife expert, Ed Drewitt. This was followed by refreshments (including and excellent birthday cake!) at Summerhill Methodist Church and a meeting to plan year 2.

23. Tue 10th April - Warmley Wander
This was a chance to discover the hidden history of industrial Warmley. It included a visit to Neptune and the Grotto followed by a light lunch at museum cafe. Afterwards some walkers stayed to visit the fascinating museum. Many thanks to our guest leader, Alan.

24. Mon 23rd April - St George’s Day Walk
A visit (in the rain) to a hidden gem of an 18th Century building hidden in the Crews Hole Woodlands and known as the Bath House. By kind permission of the landowners.

21. Thur 15th March - Deep Pit Mine and Coal walk
A walk through coal mining history in Speedwell and Fishponds.

22. Wed 28th March Stapleton to St George
The walk included a look at Snuff Mills, a stroll through the Frome Valley and Eastville Park and some back ways through Whitehall.

19. Mon 13th February City Walls Walk
A walk around the perimeter of the original settlement of Bristol to discover some of the history with a stop for refreshments at St Stephen’s cafe.

20. Wed 29th February Discover the Dings
A linear walk exploring the Dings and on through Temple Meads station to Victoria Park. The walk Continued to Windmill City Farm, to Bedminster and then buses home.

Led by park keeper Darren. A visit Brandon Hill Park and the newly restored tower.

18. Fri 27th January Meadow Vale
This walk connected 3 of St George’s green spaces, Meadow Vale, Troopers Hill and Plummers Hill using some little known walkways. Everyone enjoyed hot soup afterwards at the Meadow Vale Community Centre.

13. Wednesday 2nd November St George Park Walk & Planning Meeting
A wander around the park followed by a discussion meeting with light refreshments in the library.

14.Friday 11th November Remembrance Walk
A walk starting at Hanham Common that included a visit to a cross in memory of a World War 2 bomber pilot, Frank Samuel Martin, in Hencliff Woods. We held a two minute silence at 11am.

11. Monday 10th October Cock Rd Ramble - A wander around the Cock Rd Ridge Open Space, ending with a visit to the cafe in Grimsbury Farm for tea and coffee.

12. Wednesday 19th October Wild City Walk - A visit to South Bristol's Hengrove Mounds, which used to be an airfield but is now a major area for wildlife. Thanks to Paula from the Wild City Project for leading this walk and telling us about the site.

6. Thur 11th Aug Troopers Hill - A wet evening, but a good turnout for the Strollers first evening walk. As well as Troopers Hill, we visited Dundridge Park.

7. Wed 24th Aug Wick Golden Valley - A short bus trip for a walk in this wonderful Local Nature Reserve in South Glos followed by lunch in the local pub.

4. Mon 4th July Willsbridge Wander - a short bus trip followed by an exploration of Willsbridge LNR in hot sunshine.

5. Wed 20th July Avon Aquatic Wander - A walk around Wyatts View Open Space and Netham Park was followed by a return boat trip on historic boat Redshank to Beeses Riverside Bar and Tea Gardens to enjoy a singing event as part of the Wild River Festival. Thanks to St George Neighbourhood Partnership for funding the boat trip from their 'Wellbeing' fund.

3. The first of the group's regular walks was a 'Soltice Saunter' visiting, St George Park, Royate Hill LNR and Eastville Park.

2. This second taster walk for the St George Strollers visited Magpie Bottom followed by refreshments at Wesley Memorial Church Hall.

 

Wed 11th May 2011 - St George Strollers Launch Walk

1. This first walk for the St George Strollers included St George Park and Avonview followed by refreshments at St George Labour Club.
