Where do hazel nuts come from?

When researching before a school visit I found this wonderful picture of these hazel catkins and flowers ![Image](http://www.daviddarling.info/images/hazel_catkins.jpg)
I then went looking for the real thing in the hedge along Greendown and there it was. A tiny little dark pink flower

waiting to fertilised by the pollen blown by the wind from the catkins.

The flowers are really tiny, I had my camera set to its highest macro level. Taking the photo of the catkins I reduced the magnification by a factor of 4.
Later in the year we should find hazel nuts in the hedge if the squirrels don't beat us to it.
