Friends of Troopers Hill Butterflies

Small Tortoiseshell (female) & Marbled White

Ian says: 'there seemed to be a loose colony of Essex Skippers (I saw at least 5) at the far eastern end of Troopers Hill where there is some taller grass on slightly flatter land in a rough triangle two roads and near the entry/exit path'.
This is the first time that an Essex Skipper has been recorded on the hill, this species appears to be spreading westward across southern Britain. A report of an Essex Skipper seen in Somerset (also in July 2011) appeared in the Evening Post. Our thanks to Ian for permission to use this photograph.
