childhood at troopers hill
I was born in Jubilee Road bs5 just around the corner from Troopers Hill in 1951 - I spent nearly every day of my childhood playing over Troopers Hill with my friend Josie Whiting. This weekend I went to Exeter from Leeds to stay with my brother and he took me to Bristol to Troopers Hill, his children loved it and did not want to leave and I felt like I had come home and did not want to go back . We took loads of photos and I was so pleased to find there was a website. I shall certainly logon to that regularly

Re: childhood at troopers hill
How wonderful to hear from you. A belated welcome back and hope you can come again soon. If you have any photos of your early days at Troopers Hill that you would allow us to copy we would love to see them. Are you still in touch with Josie?
Rob and I really liked Leeds when we went up there to collect the Green Flag award at the Armouries. We travelled out to an area overlooking Wharfedale and found heathland with many similarities to Troopers Hill.
All best wishes,
Susan

Re: childhood at troopers hill
I loved viewing this website, I lived at 38 Nags Head Hill from 1961 till 1980. I now live in Southport, near Liverpool.
I think if any one place makes me think of my childhood it is Troopers Hill. Its great that there are a bunch of enthusiasts preserving this for today's generations.

Nick,
I'm pleased you like the website, I spend a lot of time on it (too much my wife will tell you!) but I really enjoy doing it and comments such as yours are always good to receive. I hope it has brought back some happy memories.
Children still enjoy the hill and I hope that we are helping to make sure that they will always be able to.

You might enjoy the photos of St George on Flickr:

I'll try to take some of Jubilee Road and Nags Head Hill if I get a chance.
If course, Troopers has its own Flickr group: http://www.flickr.com/groups/troopers-hill/pool/
Enjoy!

Re: childhood at troopers hill
Thanks for the link - the Lord Raglan became part of my life towards the end of said childhood. Can't believe it has a little picket fence and all those bright colours.
Last time I was in Bristol, Church Road was looking very down at heel - and the photos show this. My parents used to have a shop close to the corner of Beaufort Road.

Re: childhood at troopers hill
The Lord Raglan only has such bright colours in special light shortly after dawn, the way the light hits it does the trick.
Never to be repeated - it's being re-painted as we speak.

Re: childhood at troopers hill
Nick,
I can't think of any shops near the corner of Beaufort Rd (with Summerhill Rd?). There's a 2nd-hand car lot (old garage?) and some 1980's(?) flats opposite the junction.
There are still a couple (Jones the Bread) almost opposite the Pied Horse.

Re: childhood at troopers hill
Liz - my brain cells have detiorated Beaufort Road was where my Granny lived. I meant Cossham Road, directly opposite the Park School.

Re: childhood at troopers hill
Nick, I think I know exactly where you mean. There's a little row of shops there. The Park School is in new premises and the old school is a community centre. They seem to have plenty going on there - including a quarterly Farmers Market. The next one's 29th Sept 10:00 - 3:00

a long way from Liverpool I'm afraid. There was a funny little bread shop, my dads fishmongers, a woolshop and a butchers. The only traders still there in that row that I remember is Doug Lovells diy store.

Re: childhood at troopers hill
lovely to read your messaes back. As I said I grew up in Jubilee Road round the corner from Troopers Hill does anyone remember house ruins that used to be over there when we were kids we were never away from the hill it was our meeting place we used to even go over in the dark and sit on the hill and chat that was in the 50s and 60s when it was safe for kids to go anywhere without being attacked the place has a magic that never leaves you, I live in Leeds now but when I can ever get to Bristol that is the place I head for and me and my sister took our kids to see it they thought it was great!

Do you mean the old farm house off of Lamb Hill? That was demolished when they started tipping.
