Click on the photos above to see how Troopers Hill has changed from 1998 to 2006 and then to 2010. The spread of the area of gorse in the centre of the photograph is particularly noticeable. 2006 was the last year before work started to implement the 2007 Management Plan. You can see how some of the increase in vegetation has been cut back.
In 1998 the hill was still suffering from the after effects of the 1996 fire that had left most of hill blackened. Since then the heather has spread well, but so has the scrub, with the broom moving first into areas of grassland followed by bramble and then pioneer tree species such as Silver Birch and then Hawthorn and Oak. The habitat management work carried out in accordance with our Management Plan has been aimed at reversing this process.
